I’m registered at amazon.com

A few folks that know me know I am somewhat against “presents.” Sure, it’s fun to get stuff, but what is the point? I’ve mad allusions to this before. And somewhat recently, ViolentAcres had a similar rant.

Oddly, I do have a wish list. But if you look at it, just about everything on that list really isn’t giftable unless you’re insane and want to throw money at me. It may be hypocritical, but let’s be real, if you want to throw a $1000 camera at me, I’ll catch it (unless I know for a fact you’re financially insane, in which I’ll clobber you over the head with it). The point of that list is mostly an answer to “what do you want” if “nothing” doesn’t get accepted. *edit: I’ve removed it, since after writing this I’ve realized it’s really useless. /edit

Anyway, back to the point. I haven’t visited her site in a while, but I’m glad I caught that. It’s always something I’ve wondered, the phenomenon of registries. I’ve never really paid attention to them, as I’ve only been to one baby shower and a handful of close family/friend weddings. In the case of the baby shower, they had useful things on there from what I remember. Not “new super blender.” I ended up giving his daughter a google beanie because I wanted to be unique. The weddings I never really looked… they were family, we gave them money. Friend… I didn’t really give them anything which I feel a little bad.

And there lies the issue. Why did we give my family money? Just because they got married? WTF? It seems to be a bit of an expectation. Then how much? $20? $50? $300? And why do/did I feel a bit bad with my friends? It all boils down to how we’ve been raised I think. Or what we’ve seen growing up. Giving things is our way of showing love/friendship. And the more expensive it is, the “better.” It’s also a lot easier. I can’t say I’m not guilty of doing that.

Will we see a change in this pattern? I have no idea honestly. I’m no where near perfect in this manner. I’m actually a bit more selfish, though I think that’s jaded for other reasons, heh. All I really wanted to do was vent on this. A true useless blog post :)
