the politics of delegates

Alright, I’ve refrained from posting about politics because, well, it’s always a heated subject. And honestly, I don’t keep track enough to have an all out debate. The current Democratic race for the nominee has however, gained the interest of many folks who have never really paid attention. Rightfully so, given the state our nation is in. Whether or not people are voting for the right reasons, this post is specifically about the democratic delegates.

Basically, this is about Florida and Michigan. There is so much arguing and debating on “what do we do with them?” Well, nothing. It’s fairly simple. The Democratic party rolled out the rules of particular dates to run a state’s primary. Florida and Michigan decided to move ahead, and break those rules. Too bad, you lose. It’s very simple. I don’t understand why there’s a question.

For those of you that go “but then you don’t get the true number for the people,” why didn’t you complain about this process before… it’s nothing new. Bitch to your state about breaking rules. That is how it is, and there’s no sense in changing it halfway through. What message does that send, you can just do whatever you want whenever. It is VERY important we don’t do that now as all eyes are on America. It will discourage many many new voters who are jumping in because Obama has inspired them to do so (or they are simply sick and tired of our current administration). Let the rules stand, and whoever wins, wins. We have to live with it. Change the rules after so we don’t fall into it again in 2012 (… then again, haven’t we had counting issues for the past 8 years…).

While we’re changing it, we should kill off the super-delegates, or alternatively, if they are going to decide the nominee, have them strictly be sided with the popular vote. But ideally, they just get eliminated. Next time… next time.

Sure the democratic party is hurting now from this deadlock, but we have to drop the debates on rules that were broken. It has only started to bother me because I keep hearing it being brought up like it’s a vicious plan and that people need to revolt against it (ok, maybe not, but there are plenty of fired up people). The simple fact is Florida and Michigan broke the rules. And that is that.
